Mort-Homme and Vauquois; photos and text by Eric

Mort-Homme

"At Mort-Homme i looked for the entrance of a tunnel in
square 122 at the map.But this section was distroyed by
the big thunderstorm at 1999.
There had been driven by a lot of buldozers and shovels,

so i quit search there. The grenades and shells we found at
Mort-Homme was found in the areas 151 and 150 at the map,
at these two sections i saw no good tunnel openings"

Vauquois

"First we walk to the german section of the tunnels.
We visit about one kilometer of the German tunnels, it

is posible to visit about 7 kilometers of the tunnels
(these are in good shape) and if you want you can explore
more deeper tunnels. The tunnels are 60 meterīs under

the top of the hill.Later we visit the French section of the hill,
and there you can see the difference between digging,
building and living in the two sections.
Sometimes the space between the German and French tunnels

was no more than six meters.
Interesting was also the way they build the tunnels and rooms,

everything was under the ground,toilets,shower-rooms,sleeping
baraks and a medical section to.
If you realise that some of the soldiers stayed there for almost

two years (most of the time under the ground)and that each site
lost about 10.000 soldiers, the story becoms inbeliveble."
