It was in the year of 1962. The Swdish Basketball Association celebrated its 10:th anniversary and KFUM Söder won he Swedish Championships for the 8:th time.
In Södertälje basketball was an unknown sport. Sure there were some who thought it was the same as korgboll, wich they had played many years ago in school. Maybe some had got aquainted with "basket", when Harlem Globetrotters in summer six years earlier guested the icebarn.
In autumn this year, two high-school students, Benny Johansson and Per "Peyton" Lindstén, contacted the KFUM in Södertälje. Were they interested in basketball activities?
Gymnastics-manager Lennart Carlqvist had introduced basketball a few years earlier in Mariekällskolan. A high-school team had without success participated in the school-District Championships. Furthermore they "woke up" also in Blombackaskolan and a frequent exchange got started.
KFUM had in 1961 arranged a basketball tournament with five participating teams. In one of the teams, BK Bruffhno, played the high-school team of Mariekäll.
Anyway, KFUM were positive. For two hours during the week there was basketball practice in the high-schools small gymhall. Practises were ledd by a teologic student, who once had played in the highest series.
Through an add in the Länstidningen, contact was made with Enno Laur, who had played basketball i Estonia in his youth. Enno became coach of the first basketball team in Södertälje. Ruelbooks were ordered from the Association and ruels were studied. Lay-up, what the heck was that? How odd referee signs!
The 20:th of April 1963 KFUM went to Stockholm, shirts and pants were borrowed by IF Kalev, to participate in the KFUM Regional Championships. in the debut match they faced allsvenska KFUM Göteborg and lost with 4611. Most successfull scorer in this first match was Per "Peyton" Lindstén with 3 points. Next day they lost again in the consolation tournament. Second division team KFUM Sunne beat Södertälje by 3122.
Friendly matches were battled during the summer aginst KFUM Oxelösund, Solbacka IF, IF Kalev and IK Tanto. Victories over the two last mentioned second division teams encouraged the sound KFUM-gang to apply for play in the second division from the Basketball Association. They considered themselves over-qualified for third division. When Solbacka, winners of the second division, declined, the joyous message came. Södertälje had got a second division team in basketball, but yet nowhere in the city could they buy basketballs or basketball-shoes.
KFUM was a sensation in the eastern second division. First with a victory at home against KFUM Eskilstuna by 5422. In the second match they had the favourites IK Oliv hanging by the neck to the horror of coach Boris Nyman. After leading in the first half KFUM lost by 6065.
A number of victories followed. Strong Årsta BK was one of the teams that lost against the comet from Södertälje. KFUM finished on third place at the end of the season. Theese successes were achieved mainly by two men the israeli Abraham Israel and jugoslav Emil Juh.
At autumn-practises 1963 the Rosenborgshallen had been finished and practises could be done on a proper court.
With lot of luck KFUM won the second division Svealand the season 1964/65. Many matches were won with bare margin. Emil Juh had returned to Jugoslavia, but Abraham Israel stayed a bit in the season. In Norrköping KFUM was behind against Hageby BK by 5041 when a couple of minutes was left of the game. At full-time the score was 5050 and after extension-time 5950 in favour of the Södertälje team. Last 18 points scored by Abraham Israel.
In the qualifications to allsvenskan the team gained nothing but losses. A huge beating by KFUM Örebro away in the first round. Then a loss in a pretty even game against IFK Helsingborg and finally a two-point loss against Högsbo on neutral ground.
In the spring of 1965 KFUM won the District-Championship for the first time by beating KFUM Eskilstuna by 7970.
During 65/66 practises started for ladies. It was yet to pass a couple of years before any ladies-team entered the serial system.
The interest in basketball started to grow. KFUM started with instructions in the schools after regular school-hours. Seasons came and went. KFUM did not manage to win the second division any more time, but landed in the middle of the series. Competition hardened fast and the number of teams in Sweden grew explosivly.
Kjell Östh matured to be the big star in Södertälje basketball. "Esset" bacame top-scorer year after year.
In 1967/68 the Pojkseriekommittén school-series in basketball started 22 teams participated. Now the first significant steps was taken on the road that would bring fourth basketball as the most popular sport amongst the Södertälje school-kids.
The KFUM board decided that the sports-division within the club was to be dissolved in the summer of 1968. Some thirty youngsters intrested in basketball was by that decision declined further play. The 17:th of Juli the board took decision of shut-down. The same evening some of the managers of basketball got together and formed Södertälje Basketbollklubb.
The interim-board mailed letters to the thirty basketball players. Twenty seven of them joined the annual meeting in the 6:th of August. The first SBBK board of directors consisted: Benny Johansson, Kerstin Lundh, Ingemar Fäldt, Gunnar Lindén, Håkan Wettersten, May Olsson and Peter Sund.
In the first season as an independent club SBBK had men-, ladies-, mens-juniors- and two boys-team. The men practised twice a week under leadership of Håkan Wettersten. In the second eastern division they gained a 7:th position and in the District Championship finals they lost against Eskilstuna. Ladies practised once a week with coach Benny Johansson. In spite of the slight practise the team gained a second place in the Stockholm second division. In the two boys-team were some players that were to be heard from: Håkan Hellstrand, Gustav Jansson, Peter Nyström, Leif Sundin a. oth. The year after SBBK had seven teams in the serial system. The club-coaches instructed in schools after hours. The PSK-series grew fast, now some 30 teams participated. The men gained a 4:th place in the eastern second division. The ladies won the second division Stockholm and were by that qualified for allsvenskan. The big star of the team was fourteen-year old Britt-Marie Andersson top scorer 69/70.
In the season of 70/71 the club had gained it´s 200:th member. Hard work was done in education of leaders. Among other efforts an internal instructors-course was made with 30 participants. The men gained a 7:th place in the second division. Kjell Östh was as usual top scorer of the team, 466 points in 38 matches. The ladies fought an uneven fight in allsvenskan. A victory in the south first division was of course not enough, they were sent back to the second division.
In the season of 71/72 SBBK tied a new coach to the team. Uno Lahti, ex. national team and Duvbo player, was the man who implemented round-year practises. At the same time the weekly program for the team was increasedŠ
Practises gave results. The team won the eastern second division and the following qualifications, in spite of a loss in the last qualification game against LUGI by 23 points. They could afford a loss by 16. But something miracolous happened in the game between Linköping and Umeå that was played at the same time. Linköping won against Umeå and saved SBBK by a one-point victory in the last secondsŠ SBBK had to the season got a new "giant", the center Christian Önefeldt from Högsbo. The ladies gained a fourth place in the second division and Britt-Marie Andersson bacame the clubs first national player. The clubs Boys A (born 55/56) won sensationaly the Swedish Championships (Riksmästerskapet) by beating the big favorites Solna IF.
The SBBK men faced the same faith as the ladies team two years earlier. They stayed only for one year in the highest division. Four games were won, but it was only enough to get a place next to the last team in the series.
Håkan Hellstrand travelled with the junior national team to USA.
The ladies had a middle-season. The teams "big" had left the club Bitte Andersson for allsvenska Rush and "Meta" Lindblad for Falun.
Now there were 53 teams in the PSK-series. The first farm-club was formed Tälje Basket. The old Club-office at Orrstigen was traded for a bigger at Erikshällsgatan.
Now the avalanche started rolling across the country. Alvik took back the Championship from Solna, thanks to Glenn Berry and Mike Perry. Mini Basket Cup was carried through with 7.000 class-teams, with finals televised live and with 10.000 spectators with the King as officialŠ
For the season 73/74 Tommy Sundin took over the trainership for the mens team. A "terrortraining" was the goundstone for a victory in the second division. The club offered spectators their money back if they should loose at home games. There were no money payed back in Blombackahallen. Qualifications also went easy, they were back in allsvenskan. Two victories were gained in the Swedish Championships (Riksmästerskapet), ladies gained a 6:th place in the second division, also Peter Nyström got to be junior national team playerŠ
SBBK start the SDV-activities (Stadsdelsverksamheten). Four "clubs" was planned to host 300 boys and girls 600 showed upŠ
The mens team was a sensation in the autumn -74 in allsvenskan. In the team were Greg Peterson and Roscoe Wilson, they soon became favorites. The 7:th of december history was made in Scaniarinken. The first game in a ice-hockey rink in Sveden, was played for 5.700 spectators. Basketball had became big in SödertäljeŠ
Peter Nyström steps into the national team, "Bitte" Andersson comes back and SBBK wins "ladies second" without losses, two teams won the Swedish Championship (Riksmästare), mens juniors became Swedish Champions och SDV was incresead to eight clubs.
For the season 75/76. Jim Ó Keefe starts, Mike Westra and Brad Dean step into the green- and white dress. Håkan Wettersten becomes coach of the ladies team, that gets a couple of good drafts: Ann-Marie Wikner, Ann-Marie Frykberg and Pia ErikssonŠ
What then happens is contemporary history. The club has kept on growing, got an office that works, got sex farm-clubs and achieved great sporting results.
