The group's leader, nicknamed Tudee is the driving force behind the mural project. He also has a deep and mystical connection to a spirit-infested and special effects-driven "dreamtime," in which he is taunted by a decadent Nero like figure who represents a white colonialism of the mind. Freddy is a Native American haunted by both substance abuse and time spent in prison. Kaz is a health-conscious, pacifistic black man trapped in a violent, fast-food environment. These three, and the entire film, are offset by the presence of Tudee's cousin, Abel, a miasma of foul mouthed misogyny, racism, drug addiction, and all-around chronic insufferability. It's hard to believe that anyone would want to travel with this guy, especially in a cramped van headed across the country. Perhaps scariest of all, his character is the most fully developed and therefore the most realistic figure in the movie.

Running a different course is Evey, traveling alone in the desert with a mysterious package. Her car collides with another car on the highway, killing its occupant. A white male dressed in Native American war attire and the artists in the van stop to help.
