Oasis Win Big at the 1997 Q Awards

Oasis won the award for "Best Act In The World Today" at the 1997 Q Awards yesterday (4 November)at the Park Lane Hotel, London, England.

One of the categories voted for by Q's readers and one that proved the 'Oasis are in decline' rumours may be somewhat premature. The voting for this one was "As close as the General Election" so they seem pretty secure for the present.

Last year, memorably, the brothers Gallagher were both at the ceremony. This year they were in France but sent a video message along the lines of "We won this last year and thought we deserved it then. We've won it this year and still think we deserve it". There was much not entirely coherent talk of Q and the alphabet which seemed to suggest that the band don't need to be at an event to get into the spirit of it. Liam signed off with "I hope you have a top day and all go and get arrested." Only time will tell...

Don't Look Back In Anger Straight In At Number 1

Don't Look Back In Anger, the UK single released just last week, stormed into the official Radio 1 charts at number #1. This makes it Oasis' second UK number one after Some Might Say last year. Roll With It and Wonderwall both only reached the number #2 position.
Sales were undoubtedly helped by Liam's 'bratish' performance at the Brit awards last week and by the awards the band won, although it's likely Don't Look Back In Anger would have made it to the top anyway.
This caps a great week for Oasis, as (What's The Story) Morning Glory? held the number #1 album spot, and Definitely Maybe returned to the British top ten.

Oasis Move to #5 in the Billbord Charts

Today Oasis moved up from #9 to number #5 in the American Billboard Album Charts with (What's The Story) Morning Glory? The debut American single, Wonderwall, went up from #21 to #18 in the singles charts, which are natorious for moving slowly. #18 is the highest ever chart placing for a debut single in the American charts.
