I saw The Hellacopters the first first time in Hultsfred
1996. They weren't playing on the stage. No, they were
playing on the backstage area for journalists and other
creeps. I was there, me and my camera. I was getting paid
for being there, for seeing Cure, Iggy, Björk, Frank
Black, Hellacopters and many more bands. I just needed to
take pictures for a newspaper.
Hellacopters arrived with a helicopter. There wasn't much
of a PA to talk about, just a tiny amplifying system for the
song. The guitar amps were small Marshalls combos and the
sound was bad and extremely distorted.
It was wonderful! The guys were screaming and lying on
their back in the grass, everybody in the band were slamming
their instrument, hitting as much as they could and it
sounded like shit. I loved it! What's this? I thought. This
is the best band in the world! It sounded like Stooges and
New York Dolls and all the great rock'n'roll bands put
together, it was pure energy. They ever looked right.
The evening went by talking with the sweaty guys in The
Hellacopters and drinking their beer. Their record company
was buying. In fact, they had a van full of beer with them
and it surely didn't make us think less nice things about
The Hellacopters.
That was The Hellacopters way to promote their brand new
first album, Supershitty To The Max. Well, they fooled me,
anyway.
