First of all: I'm not necessarily objective when I write about the Turpentines. I know the guys since a few years back, we have been drinking together, played at same venues and so on. We're still pals.
Turpentines had just finished their 14-day tour in Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland before they had this concert in Nyköping. It was only an hours drive away from Hälleforsnäs so Fredde, Pelle and I took us there. The concert was meant for youngsters who aren't allowed to get in to the restaurants yet. You couldn't drink or even smoke. It was OK. We wanted to see Turpentines in action, and the Hellacopters was a bonus. A very nice bonus. Fredde and Pelle had to choose between Saxon in Eskilstuna and Turpentines with Hellacopters in Nyköping. I wonder how they could make up their minds... Turpentines rules! OK, they are not the best musicians on the face of the earth and there's zillions of guys out there (a few at least) who can write better songs than Turpentines. But they still can't compete with them. Turpentines just put all the Ba-Ba-Ra-Ra-Cu-Cu-Da-Das they've ever heard together and they've got a hit record! And another one. And another one... Turpentines is a charming band. They're posing on the stage like they probably did in front of the mirror in their own room when they still lived at home. Macke looked like Mick Jones and acted like Joe Strummer at the same time. Ferdi did the duck walk (Chuck Berry) and Andis... I don't who he looked like. Maybe himself. Björnlund behind the drum set wants to look like Marky Ramone, I'm sure. But how do you do that? By not doing that much? Posing is nice. Who wants to see a bunch of guys standing on the stage and just playing their instruments? Who wants to see Oasis? Who wants to HEAR Oasis? - Not me. I want to see and hear a bunch of young men enjoying their selves on the stage, playing garage punk rock. Being cool. A band like Turpentines. There's not that many bands like that left on this planet. Or maybe there is, but not around here. Turpentines sing lines like "Booze, money, little girls - give this man what he deserves" and "Bama Lama Yeah" and it's all there! That's rock'n'roll. That engine works. It's fast, it's loud, it's hilarious. It's a good old fashioned straight-six carburetor engine that sounds wonderful, needs lots of gasoline and maintenance to work. They don't make that kind of engines anymore.
