This page contains the history of Los Angeles, from the
Mission days, to the present. What we are doing in the Los Angeles Domain
is holding a series of historical games. Players are presented with personas
and goals, and then it is up to them to accomplish them. Whatever occurs
at these games is written into the official history of the city. We are
going to hold five of these games. The 1855 gold rush era, the 1928 Hollywood
era, the 1940 war era, the 1965 post-Watts Riots era, the 1992 post-L.A.
Riots era. The history of the city will be interspersed with descriptions
of each game, as a historical "snapshot" that documented some major event
in the city's history. This page will be updated after each game, and should
reach completion at the end of March.
History of the City
of Los Angeles according to the Kindred
El Pueblo de la Reina de Los
Angeles - The Town of the Queen of the Angels
The genesis of what was to become Los Angeles started
in the late 18th century, when Felipe de Neve, the Spanish governor of
California founded the commnity in 1781. At the time, there were no Kindred
in the area. As the missions grew in importance in the area, a certain
group of Kindred took an interest in the area, those of the Sabbat. A few
of them arrived in the village, and they preyed on the mortals. Tales of
Los Diablos de la Noche - The Demons of the Night - circled the population
of the area, but to most they were just tales. The small group of Sabbat
established themselves in a local church, and from there the operated for
about 70 years.
In 1846 the Americans captured the city, and a new
influx of Kine entered the area. Among them was Tobias O'Toole, a Camarilla
Gangrel that accompanied the army. He stayed in the area for a while, and
noted the situation. He observed the control that the Sabbat held over
the city. As gold was discovered in the area the influx of Kine oversaturated
the then small town. In 1850 Los Angeles received its town charter from
the government. Gold was king, and the fortunes of many rose and fell.
The Sabbat quickly moved in on this and took control of the banks, where
ultimately all the gold arrived. Times were good. Back in the east, certain
Camarilla Ventrue took notice of this, and a young Ventrue named Sherman
Oak was dispatched into the area. He took a quick look around, and saw
what needed to be done. He contacted his superiors back in the east, and
arranged a bank crash, which he countered with the opening of his own bank.
This caused the Kine to leave the Sabbat-controlled banks, and switch over
to the new, Camarilla-controlled bank. The Sabbat was mildly upset at this
to say the least, and they planned their revenge. But the Camarilla was
not stupid. Numerous teams were dispatched from various areas, and by ones
and twos the Kindred arrived in the town. Coupled with the independents
who arrived to try their luck at mining and such enterprises, the Sabbat
suddenly found themselves quite outnumbered. Reports also filtered in of
the Garou leaving the wilderness and coming closer to the towns. Then one
fateful night in 1855...
The 1855 Historical Game
-
The Sabbat were restless. There were way too many Kindred
milling around, none of which were of their sect. They were outnumbered
at least two to one. In addition large groups of people roamed in packs.
They were not Kindred, so they had to be Garou. The loyalist leadership
retreated back to their church to ponder. Meanwhile the revolutionary faction
was milling about town ambushing lone Kindred. The Camarilla started organizing.
Talk of elections was on everyone's lips, as order was slowly forged from
chaos. The Sabbat was not too thrilled. A surprise attack by the Garou
thinned their numbers as some of the loyalists were killed or torpored.
They retired to the safety of their church to ponder. The Camarilla was
alerted to their presence however. The Tremere sighted one of their hated
anit-tribu and the Nosferatu located their haven. The Camarilla united
and approached the church, guns drawn. The Sabbat within discovered their
approach as their enemies began to batter down the Church doors. The Lasombra
quickly cast the area in darkness, and ran to the back entrance. A female
brujah stepped up, and ripped the door off the hinges, and the blackness
oozed out. They paused for a second, and charged within. A small contingent
ran to the back, but they were too late. A shattered window greeted them,
and nobody in sight. Disappointed they retreated back to the town hall
to decide their elections. As they pondered, the Sabbat was busy getting
their revenge. They tracked the Garou back to their gathering place, and
defiled it. The Garou upon finding their holy place desecrated raced back
into town, just as the Camarilla decided that a young Tremere named Elizabeth
would be the mayor. The doors burst open as a gigantic Garou clad in overalls
burst in, and rent a young gangrel in two. From all sides bloodthirsty
Garou burst in. The battle was joined. A few Kindred under the direction
of Sherman Oak bid a hasty retreat to his bank, and hid in the vault. The
rest were not so lucky. The battle raged, and much blood was spilled. It
was only due to the great mental powers of the Kindred that they tiumphed
in the melee. But the results were not pretty. Garou carcasses filled the
hall, as did pools of blood and ashed where various Kindred were wiped
out. The Garou were wiped out, but it cost the Camarilla over half their
numbers. The Sabbat could have struck back at that moment, had it not been
for their inter faction war. The revolutionaries struck and wiped out their
loyalist leadership. The archbishop was killed, as were his lieutenants.
A young Sabbat Caitiff grinned as she left their hideout, her blood much
strengthened. Thus events transpired...
The next 70 years were a time of relative peace, dominated
by the growth of the region and of industry. Railroads linked the west
with the east, and the Ventrue were pleased. More Kindred entered the city.
The gold dried up, and the Kine had to find new things to do. Some left,
but those who stayed were soon rewarded when oil was discovered. The Ventrue
rejoiced again, for more money was theirs. Agriculture boomed as irrigation
was introduced, and the harbor was opened. Amongst the Kindred this was
a down time, a time of prosperity. The Ventrue were quickly becoming millionaires.
They dominated the leadership of the Camarilla at this time, occasinally
butting heads with the Tremere and the Toreador. The Gangrel and Brujah
thrived amongst the poor of the city, while the Nosferatu established their
information network. And so the city grew, from 100,000 in 1900 to half
a million by 1920. This period saw a great influx of Toreador, and when
so many of their clan gather in one place something must result. That result
was Hollywood. The Golden Era of Hollywood began and the Toreador thrived.
Movie studios opened and everyone was either an actor or a producer. When
the Platt Amendment establishing Prohibition was enacted the rush to bootlegging
was on. Interestingly enough, this business was monopolized my a group
of Garou of the Glass Walker tribe. As their assistants they had a small
group of Brujah. On Valentine's Day 1928, Samuel Goldstein, a prominent
Toreador threw a party to celebrate his favorite holiday. He had no idea
what would transpire...
The 1928 Historical Game
-
The party was a great success. Famous Toreador actors and
actresses filled the place, including the famous Zola Peters. Samuel went
around gretting each person in turn. He was accompanied by his quiet bodyguard
Salim, a powerful member of the Assamite clan. Sherman Oak and Ira Silverberg,
another Ventrue went around trying to strike deals, contracting performers
and directors. Hattie, an ambitious toraUpstairs however, Don Vincenso
Giovanni iunstructed his boys on their mission for the evening, to take
over the bootlegging industry. The Kennedys, the bootlegging Garou, were
present, as were the Brujah led by Javier Enriquez. The Giovanni were contacted
by members of both factions for aid, and thus were in the city. What they
did not know is that there was another group of Garou around, ones who
hated alcohol. They snuk about the party unseen, waiting. They also did
not know about a hungry ghoul who hunted other Kindred for their vitae.
Hours of politics followed. Tensions were high. The Don met the influential
people present, and tried to tell the Garou leader of treachery within
his organization, but the Glass Walker would not listen. The Giovanni then
attempted to have some of the Glass Walkers arrested. What followed was
a shock to all. A Garou appeared in the midst of the crowd in full Crinos
form, and then ripped a Ventrue FBI agent to shreds. He turned his wrath
to a few unfortunate Toreador in the area who shared the same fate. The
summoned police fled, in grips of Delirium. He then began tearing the building
apart. A few of the Giovanni opened fire on the rampaging Garou. To no
avail, their bullets did little damage to the rampaging beast. Finally
Salim arrived on the spot, and opened fire on the Garou. He finally went
down. At which the Don appeared and proceeded to steal the soul of the
hapless Garou. Tensions mounted even more. The three factions had a meeting
to discuss events. Meanwhile the ghoul plied his bloody trade. A few Toreador
disappeared in the shadows. Meanwhile Goldstein sated his perverted desire
for young Toreador, as his bodyguard brought their staked bodies to him.
The other Toreador became alarmed as their numbers began thinning. Then,
by total accident, the carnage began. One of the Giovanni was ordered by
his Don to bring back the soul of one of the Garou for questioning. He
failed and was beset by the Garou. The rest of the Garou then appeared
and converged on the lone Giovanni. They were then joined by the Brujah.
The Giovanni, alarmed at the tardiness of their associate arrived to see
the Garou surrounding his bloody body. They quickly attacked throwing huge
boulders at the onrushing Garou. The Don then brought his powers of Necromancy
to full force as he proceeded to steal the souls of the Garou one by one.
His lackeys finished off the rest of the Garou, and the battle was over.
The old bootlegging faction was killed off, and the Giovanni were firmly
in charge. They also managed to make inroads into the entertainment industry.
But little did they know that the good times would soon end...
The next decade was a time of despair for the Kine of the
world. The depression that gripped the planet soon led to the rise of totalitarian
regimes in Europe. And soon war was on the horizon. The politics of the
Camarilla are still remnants of the old regime. Samuel Goldstein, now the
prince, is in power. The Ventrue control of industry has been slowly usurped
by the Tremere, and the Gangrel slowly adapt to the urban jungle. Racial
tensions in the city are on the rise, and the ranks of the Brujah are swelled
with the oppressed. Then finally war erupts in Europe. Ties of loyalty
are tested. Those Kindred of European descent are at odds with each other.
Special problems arise for the Tremere, most of which are of Germanic origin.
The country maintains its neutrality, but the Kindred gather at nights
to discuss the role that they will play in the conflict to come. One such
night a Gangrel elder calls the Kindred of the city to a meeting, he has
an announcement to make...
The 1940 Historical Game
-
The Kindred all gathered. The place was abuzz with news of
a fight in the dockyards. The Masquerade was breached, and rumors abounded.
War was looming on the horizon and it was the main topic of discussion.
