The Cupwinners Cup!
Chelsea made an excellent finish on a year thatīs been crowded with events. The biggest event was when Gullit was fired but now everobody will remember this year for the Cupwinners Cup. Chelsea did face some seriuos competition on their way to the final but the players commitment made it possible to bring home this years second trophy. Allthough the final will only be remembered for one goal, Chelsea put up with some great football trough the entire tournament. The one match i wont forget was the one against Vizenca at Stamford Bridge. Having been beaten with 1-0 in Italy, Chelsea had some hard work to perform. When Vizenca scored the opening goal in London a lot of us thougt that Chelsea was out of the tournament, but with 45 min of worldclass football the score was 3-1 when the referee signaled for full time. Zola, Poyet and the veteran Mark Hughes was the heroes of the night in a game filled with fighting spirit. Then it was time to travel to the Swedish capital Stockholm and face Stuttgart. The match started of with two very cautious teams and the first half passed without a goal. The second half started of with greater pace and the chances were there, but still no goal. Then Chelsea made a substitute and Zola entered the pitch as Flo left it. 19 seconds later and the second time Zola touched the ball, he had produced a quality goal that will go to Chelsea history. The chip from Dennis Wise was perfect and Zola did not make a misstake when facing the Stuttgart keeper. The only goal of the match made Chelsea winners of the Cupwinners Cup for the second time in history. When other England teams did not perform well in Europe, Chelsea took the chance to be the most succesfull team from the football nation.
