Debut album from one of the giants of progressive music - Yes. Perhaps I should try to
explain how Yes sound first of all. Imagine some 70's hard rock, throw in influences from
about everywhere; folk music, 60's pop/rock and country. Usually there's lots of keyboards
also, and the singer Jon Anderson has a very soft and clean voice which always works, no matter
if the album itself is crap - you always get great vocals from this guy.
Since this is their first album from 69, it doesn't have the sound they later developed
during the 70's. Here they were trying to find that special sound, but don't really succeed.
It's not one of their better efforts, in fact it's very uneven. While there are great
tracks such as "Beyond and before" (great riff!), "Looking around" (which has a brilliant
organ lead) and "I see you" (which is a cover I believe), there's also tracks like
"Yesterday and today" which is totally dull and boring.
