The beginning!

The outboard racers evolved in the 30'th when the outboard engine became lighter and stronger. A step were incorporated in the bottom of the hull. This made the boat run faster.

This pic is from 1938 and show a C class Plym-Jacoby "Galosch" running a Trim CP engine.

The hydroplane (or swe; tre-punktare, eng; three-pointer) evolved around 1940-50. In America they were built up around surplus engines from ww2 like Allison or RR Merlin. The hydroplane has contact with the water through three points on the hull, on either side in front and centered in the rear.

Here's the famous American U-55 (Unlimited Class) Gale V. Also compare the difference in size with the smaller Classes--this one is huge in comparison.
