Rai, the younger brother of former international Socrates, rejoined Sao Paulo and in his very first game back, he scored one goal and led them to victory in the Paulista championship final against Corinthians. Elegant midfielder with a delicate touch.
He began the 1994 World Cup as Brazil's captain but was later dropped after some uninspiring performances and missed the final, when Brazil beat Italy on penalties after a 0-0 draw. Despite a superb season in France, he was overlooked by Brazil for the 1998 World Cup, although he was picked for a friendly against Argentina in April -- the last of his 48 caps. Won a second French Cup in May before returning to Sao Paulo after five years in Paris.
