The worlds first mass-produced hybridcar is called Toyota Prius. It went on sale in Japan nearly 3 years ago. All ready now the first speciment are rolling in Europe and Sweden.

Hybrid is according to the dictionary a cross between two different types. In the context of cars the expression means two different ways to drive an engine. The Toyota Prius has in other words two engines. One 1.5 litre four cylinder petrol engine with 58hk/43kw and an electricengine with 41hk/30kw.

With some improvised acceleration measurements the Prius did 0-100 km/h in 17 seconds. This is acceptable for an extremly environment friendly familycar.

According to Toyota the exhaust effluent has been reduced to a ordinary catalist car.

The top speed is 160 km/h but only for a couple of minutes then the reserve power in the battery is consumed and the car does at the best 140km/h. And that is just good enough.

The fuelconsumption for Toyotas Hybridcar is about 0,35-0,50/litre per ten km in mixed driving.
