EARLY PHILIPPINE NAMES

Ma-i  (land of barbarians), Chin-san (mountain of gold), Lui-sung (land adjacent to the mainland), and San-tao (three islands) by the Chinese traders in the 10th century.
                                         
Luzon Islands, Luzones or Lucones by the Japanese.
                                         
Archipelago of San Lazaro.  The Spanish discoverers, led by Magellan, discovered the island on the Sabbath of Saint Lazarus, March 16, 1521.
                                         
Vall Seu Parigne (Valley Without Peril).  The natives showed hospitality and brotherly love for the Spaniards.
                                         
Islas del Poniente (Islands of the West).  Magellan came here by the westernly route from Spain.
                                         
Islands of the East.  The Portugese came to the Philippines by the easterly route.

Felipinas.  In 1542, conquistador Ruy Lopez de Villalobos claimed the island of Tandaya (Leyte or Samar) and named it after King Felipe (Phillip) II of Spain.  The Americans derived the English word Philippines from the Spanish word Felipinas.
