Karl-Birger Blomdahl, if anyone, made a strong impact on Swedish 20th century music in a number of important ways. Both in the position as professor of composition and, later on, as the head of the music channel at Sveriges Radio, he was a powerful advocate of new trends within Swedish music. Blomdahl was also the leading creative force within the famous Monday Group (Måndagsgruppen), which provided a meeting-place for prominent Swedish composers.

In his work Blomdahl was on a constant search for new ways of musical expressions and he was not a stranger to anything. Two of the composers that were important to Blomdahl and his music were Hindemith and Alban Berg. The most important influence, however, came from the grand old man of Swedish music himself, Hilding Rosenberg. Rosenberg saw to Blomdahl and became his teacher in composition. Among the pupils of Blomdahl himself may be found such renowned composers as Allan Pettersson and Gunnar Bucht.

To a Swedish audience Blomdahl is above all known for his opera, Aniara. Blomdahl wrote several operas, as well as chamber music and he also wrote three symphonies. He experienced an international breakthrough with his third symphony. It was written in 1950 and it holds a key position within Swedish 20th century music. Blomdahl called it "Facetter" ("Facets") and the name of my homepage was given in reference to that musical work.
