Meet Alta Bubbe!

Alta Bubbe was submitted to an open exhibit called "Portrait-Self Portrait" at the Gotland Art Museum. Local artists were invited to submit self-portraits in all media. At the time of the call for entries, I was in the midst of losing a family member, September 11 was still fresh in my mind, and I was examining what happens to one's identity when one picks oneself and moves halfway around the world. The result was Alta Bubbe, a 90 cm long doll in a child's lawn chair. Her dress is modeled on a traditional Afghani pattern while her printed apron is based on a traditional Swedish pattern.
