Alta Bubbe's Pedigree
For the art history inclined

The title of this piece is Summan av mitt förflutna (Alta Bubbe). She was designed during the winter of 2002 on Gotland over a period of about two weeks in response to an announcement of an open exhibit on the theme of self-portrait. At the time that I saw the announcement, I was actively experimenting with felt and reading about clothing design. The primary visual inspiration was the clothes and decorative objects designed by my Grandmother Ida in the 1960's and '70's, and Alta Bubbe was made with the advice and help of a number of local artists and sources at the local library.

The materials used are primarily cottons and wools, with some synthetics. Additional materials are pipe cleaners, plaster, buttons, and hot glue. The apron has both computer and commercially printed images--my grandmothers, a Joni Mitchell album, a snapshot from California, and a woman blessing the Shabbas candles. The ties on the apron are commercial fabric, one printed with the Pledge of Allegiance and one printed with a sea chart of the sea between the mainland and Gotland. The apron is made from an old shirt of my father's. The head is a plaster mask that a friend made of my face, and the hair is of natural white sheep's wool.
