9800419: Pens end regular season: The Pens ended their regular season in a good way. After winning their last two games the Penguins crunched Boston Bruins 5-2 in the last game. Straka scored his first hat-trick in over four years, and Jagr also scored a goal. The Pens ended up second in Eastern Conference and will be facing the Canadiens in the first round of the PlayOff starting Wednesday or Thursday.
The Art Ross Trophy winner of the year is Jaromir Jagr. He wins the title with only 102 points. This league are in trouble.
9800410: Pens loose again: Ron Francis scored the only goal in the second period, but Ottawa downed the Pens 4-1. The Pens have lost all their 3 latest games and are now only 6 points ahead of Boston.
9800405: Pens end winless streak (and I end updateless streak): After five games without a win the Pens finally won. They beat Tampa Bay 4-1. New Penguin Sean Pronger scored one goal. Jagr was also among the goalscorers.
980308: The Hit!!: Darius Kasparaitis knocked Eric Lindros senseless in tonights game against the Flyers. He had to leave the game with help from his teammates. Lindros was looking a little bit too long for a puck and Darius checked him cleanely. Flyers goalie Sean Burke also left the game with some kind of injury.
Jaromir Jagr had a great game tonight. He assisted Morozov on the tying goal and Straka on the winning goal AND scored the emptynetter by himself. The game ended 6-4 and the teams are looking forward to a phsycical rematch tomorrow!
980222: Congratulations!!: Congratulations to Jaromir Jagr, Jiri Slegr and the other Czeck Pens, what the heck, congrtulations to the whole Czeck Republic team for the olympic gold medal. Youīve earned it for sure! Darius Kasparaitis and Alexei Morozov should also be honoured for their silver medal, and so should Toumas Gronman for the bronze!
The final game of the olympic hockey tournament was totally dominated by the Czecks. Especially in the third period. The Russians could only defend themselves. And 8:08 into the third period Petr Svoboda of the Flyers shot from the blue line and scored the only goal in the game. The Russians couldnīt get past Dominik the Dominator. Although Spacek was named best defender in the tournament Jiri Slegr was the best defender on th ice today! Congratulations!!!!
980205: Pens - Caps 2-2: Short report today (I really donīt have the time to do more). The game against Washington ended up in a tie, 2-2. The Pens goalscorers were Jaromir Jagr and Chris Ferraro.
980203: Seven game unbetaen streak ended: Although Jaromir Jagr gave the Pens a 1-0 lead with the only goal of the first period the Islanders beat the Pens 4-2.

980201: Pens won against Detroit: After a stunning effort by Tom Barrasso, Fredrik Olausson and the rest of the team the Pens beat the Red Wings 4-2 in the Igloo. The Pens only managed 21 shoots compared to the Red Wings 53, but Tommie was acting like a brick wall and the Pens managed to bury their chances. Former Penguin Larry Murph had a goal disallowed due to goalie interference by Mathieu Dandenault.

980130: Good effort by Pens D: The Pens defenders Hatcher and Olausson scored 4 points today (Hatcher 2g, Olausson 2a) as the Pens won in Boston 4-2. The other pens goals were scored by Alex Hicks and, of course, Stu Barnes.
980129: Pens - Washington 2-2: Alex Hicks is back in the game. He tied the game 2-2 tonight. Stu Barnes continues to play good hockey, scoring his 19th goal of the season.
980125: Jagr captures scoring lead: Jaromir Jagr assisted on two goals (both from Barnes) which put him 1 point ahead of Peter Forsberg. The Pens won 4-2 over Boston. Straka and Brown scored the other goals for the Pens.
980123: Pens win in New Jersey: Tom Barrasso had a strong game and Hatcher scored a shorthanded goal as the Pens beat the Devils 3-2. Jagr and Barnes scored one goal each!
980119: Jagr scores in All-Star Game: Jaromir Jagr scored the 2-0 goal for the World All Stars. WAS, however, lost 8-7 in a not that good effort.
980115: Big loss + other news: The Pens lost to Boston 5-2 today. No explanation needed. The Pens defense left Barrasso alone with the Bruins offense.
The Pens have waived Peter Ferraro. He was claimed by his former team NY Rangers. That will leave som space for guys like Joe Dziedzic.
The contract negotiations with Jagr is closed. Both parts have agreed on a contract extension.
980113: Pens wins in Carolina: Thereīs not much to say about this game. Francis scored two goals and Jagr scored one as the Pens beat one of the worst teams in the league 4-1. Brad Werenka scored the empty netter. Tom Barrasso returned to the lineup today.
980111: Stu nets natural hat trick: Stu Barnes netted the first three goals in the Pens 4-1 winning game over the Devils. All three goals came on power-play. This was his first hat trick in 6 years. Robert Lang also scored a goal. Jason Arnott spoiled Skudras shutout 15:02 into the 3rd period.
980110: Lemieux and Jagr on list of NHL Great 50: The Hockey News has named the top 50 NHL-players of all time. Mario Lemieux placed fourth behind Wayne Gretzky (No. 1), Bobby Orr (2nd) and Gordie Howe (3rd). Jagr placed 37th.
980107: Easy victory over the Isles: Peter Skudra stopped 24 shots of 26 as the Pens won for the third time in four games. Hatcher had a goal and an assist. Jagr assisted on Hatchers 3-2 goal. The other Pens goals were scored by Barnes, Brown and Slegr.
980104: Pens lose in O-T: Kamensky scored the gamewinning 5-4 O-T goal to complete his fourth career hat trick as the Pens were beaten by the Colorado Avalanche. The Pens were down 4-1 after the 2nd period but after a great effort in the 3rd period which resulted in 3 goals scored by Jagr, Dome and, believe it or not, Darius Kasparaitis!!!
Despite the loss the Pens had a good game. It shows that they really can compete with the best teams in the league.
980101: Pens - Carolina 3-2: No big report today (because itīs my birthday). Peter Ferraro was one of the goalscorers for the Penguins. Peter Skudra was the Pens goalie tonight.
971231: Straka out 4-6 weeks: Martin Straka will be out 4-6 weeks with a broken foot. He broke his foot when he atemted to block a shoot in the 5-1 win over the Islanders.
971230: Francis scores a hat-trick: Jaromir Jagr was back in the lineup today and Francis scored his 11th career hat-trick. Jagr contributed with 1 goal and 3 assists in a game where the Pens crunched the Islanders 5-1. Stu Barnes made three assists. Tom Barrasso left the game with an injury and Petr Skudra replaced him.
971229: Jagr wins All-Star voting: Jaromir Jagr will be in the starting lineup in the All-Star game. He had 449,582 votes. Mighty Ducks of Anaheim wing Teemu Selanne placed second with 366,145 votes. Jagr and Selanne will be joined by Peter Forsberg of the Colorado Avalanche. Sandis Ozolinsh (Colorado) and Viacheslav Fetisov will be defensemen. Hasek will be the starting goalie.
971228: Site news: It is finally moved!! Iīve moved this page to a more reliable server. I hope youīll like it!!!!
971228: Pens lost: Thereīs really not much to say about tonights game. Scott Thornton of the Montreal Canadiens scored the only goal in the game 4 minutes into the second period. Jagr left the game in the first period with a groin injury. Petr Skudra played well. I guess Tom Barrasso needed a rest. The Pens, however, is still in first position in the Northeast Division.
971227: Jagr came up big: Jaromir Jagr had a great
game tonight with two goals and one assist and Tom Barrasso acted like a brickwall as the Pens ended a four-game
winless streak with a 4-1 victory over the Caps.
Washington took a 1-0 lead 6:28 into the first period but Hatcher scored a powerplay goal 17:03 assisted by Jagr
and Brown. There were no scoring in the second period but Jagr scored the 2-1 goal 1:21 into the 3rd period.
Lang scored 15:18, and Jagr sent Elvis home with the empty netter 19:42 assisted by Hatcher.
971226: News: A new Weekend Report. Check it out.
971222: Site news: As youīve already noticed I
havnīt updated the page for a while. That was due to some (major) troubles with my
internet-connection. I will aslo try to move the page to a faster server.
While I was trying to get my internet-connection work properly the Pens played two games.
One in Denver and one in St. Louis. Coloradeo is the best team in te league I think, but
both teams played splendid hockey and the game ended up in a tie. Garry Valk scored his
first goal of the season. The other game wasnīt that good. The Pens lost 4-1 to the
Blues. Francis scored the only goal, but other than that the Pens couldnīt put the puck
behind Fuhr.
971217: Thank you, Tom: The Pens were badly outshoot
in this game but Tom Barrasso won one point for the Pens. Rob Zamuner gave Tampa Bay a 1-0
lead in the first period, but Jagr scored the last goal of the game in the second period.
Stu Barnes played in the top line with Francis and Jagr tonight.
Next game is against Colorado. Time to prove something, eh?
971213: A tie in Phoenix: The Coyotes had a 2-0
advantage, but the Pens tied the game in the third. Stu Barnes scored the first penguin
goal on a powerplay 14:01 into the second period assisted by Brown and Jagr. Playing in
his 1,200th NHL game Ron Francis scored 11:22 into the last period assisted by Barnes and
Hatcher.
971211: Two wins in L.A: After beating the Kings 1-2
the Pens went to Anaheim and won 3-0 after two goals by Jagr and one goal by Robert Dome.
I will try to have a better update about these games soon.
971205: Two goals by Jagr in 5-2 win: After the
humiliating 4-0 loss the Pens today won against Anaheim 5-2. Peter Skudra played the whole
game, and did it very well. It was unsure whether Tom Barrasso could play or not, and
Skudra was called with very short notice.
Former Penguin Thomas Sandstrom scored a shorthanded goal 18:58 into the 2nd period. The
Pens goalscorers were Slegr, Johansson, Jagr (2), Francis.
971205: Devils end Pittsburghīs unbeaten streak: The
Pens eight game unbeaten streak ended tonight in humiliating 4-0 loss to the Devils. Chris
Tamer was involved in three fights and was ejected in the third after his last fight.
Letīs hope this wont happen again.
971203: Injury report: Ed Olczyk will miss the next
6-8 weeks with a fractured cheek bone. He suffered his injury in the Pens 0-1 win against
the Habs when he was crushed by Bureau.
Alex Hicks will miss the next 4-6 weeks with a broken foot also suffered in last night's
game. He broke his foot when he blocked a shoot.
A little site news: Iīll maybe move this page to a faster
and better server soon. Iīm going to have a look at the possibilities for a move.
971202: Wonderful win: After crunching the Canadiens
6-3 in the Igloo, the Pens traveled to Montreal for another game against the Habs. And
guess what.... Tom Barrasso recorded his 3rd shutout for the season and Jaromir Jagr
scored the only goal in the Pens 0-1 road win. The Pens are now #1 in the Northeast
Division./p>
971129: Fifth straight win:
After tonights win over Montreal the Pens are now 6-0-1 in their last seven games. The
Pens were the best team and Montreal didnīt have a chance. Robert Lang scored his first
two goals in 19 months. Tom Barrasso left the game 8:01 into the second period with a
bruised shoulder.
"Barrasso kind of landed hard on his shoulder," Constantine said. "We don't
think it's too serious, but you kind of have to wait 'til morning to see if he's going to
be OK." He was replaced by Peter Skudra who allowed one goal of 9 shots.
Period 1: Hatcher (Barnes, Francis) (PP) 7:32
Straka (Hatcher) (SH) 15:16
Mon: Stevenson (Corson, Thornton) (PP) 16:37
Period 2: Barnes (Jagr, Francis) (PP) 1:48
Lang (Brown) 2:31
Mon: Koivu (Bure, Corson) (PP) 6:10
Lang (Olausson, Straka) (PP) 12:43
Period 3: Jagr (Francis, Hatcher) 3:54
Mon: Savage (Quintal) 15:12
971128: Jagr rumors: According to the Toronto Sun
there have been some rumors about a Jagr trade. The Pens would trade Jagr for two #1 picks
and $20 mil. This would be a complete disaster, I think. Jagr is the future for the
Penguins. They wont find a guy like him again. I hope this is just rumors, and nothing
else.
971127: Extended unbeaten streak: Short report today.
The Pens won over the Canes 3-2. Tom Barrasso had a good game. Fredrik Olausson had an
even better game, with one goal.
971125: Barrasso and Hatcher wins for the Pens: Tom
Barrasso only allowed one goal (from Donald Audette) and Kevin Hatcher scored two goals in
the Penguins 5-1 win over Buffalo. Darius Kasparaitis scored his first goal for the season
in the game. One of Hatchers goals were came from a beautiful play by Francis and Jagr.
The Pens got some Power-Plays which Buffalo deeply regretted, according to Buffaloīs
coach.
971123: Jagr returned to the lineup: Jagr scored the
OT-winning goal against the Rangers in the 4-3 win. Rangers led the game 0-1 but Barnes,
Werenka and Hicks scored one goal each. Tom Barrasso had a quite good game.
Is he Nedved problem about to be solved? Iīve heard that Nedvedīs
agent is about to give Craig Patrick a call. Maybe Petr forced him to do so.
971121: Pens won in Ottawa: The Pens won in Ottawa
2-0. Donīt have any report on this game. Toumas Gronman scored one goal.
The Pens also played 3-3 with Boston the other night. But that
wasnīt the main event that night. This was the night for Mario Lemieuxīs jersey
retirement.
971116: Leafs - Pens 0-5: The Pens and especially Tom
Barrasso played tremendous hockey tonight winning over the Leafs 5-0. Tom Barrasso reached
a milestone when he notched his 25th career shutout. The Penguins, playing their second
straight game without Jaromir Jagr, broke a six-game winless streak. Francis had a goal
and an assist. I hope weīll see more of this on Wednesday when the Bruins are coming to
Pittsburgh.
I couldnīt give you a report on the Rangers - Pens game because my
internet connection wasnīt working properly. Sorry.
971114: Jagr out two games: Jaromir Jagr wont play the
two games against the Rangers and the Maple Leafs due to his hip injury. The Pens have
been horrible the last 5 games (0-3-2), and Jagr hasnīt beenable to do much about it
because of his injury.
971113: Another terrible loss: Olaf Kolzig was less
than a minute away from a shutout when Slegr scored. This, however, didnīt help very
much. Washington won 4-1 and the Pens are struggeling even more in the Northeast Division.
Boston, Ottawa and Montreal are way above Pittsburgh. The Pens really have to do
something. Sign Nedved, get another decent defender and much more.
971112: Different news: The Pens are talking to the
New Jersey Devils about a trade that would send Bill Guerin to Pittsburgh. The Pens would
probably send Nedved and Tamer to New Jersey in exchange. This might be a good trade. Bill
Guerin is a great young player. He can score goals and dig after the puck in the corners.
Heīs also a great powerforward. I think the Pens will do just fine without Tamer. Nedved
on the other hand is more difficult. He is also a great player. He is a pure goalscorer, a
good face-off man. But I donīt think heīll sign for the Pens. I still think that this
trade would be good. (Thanks to IR for this one.)
Jagr is hurt. It might be good to put him on the injurylist for a week or so. A healthy
Jagr is better than a halfgood Jagr!
Wregget is another hurt player. Barrasso has also been hurt, and I donīt think heīs
totally healthy yet. Time to start the contract discussions with Lalime, eh??
971109: Another tie: The Pens had another tie tonight.
They played 2-2 with Buffalo. The Pens need points but canīt get them from ties. One
reason for the Pens lack of points could be the fact that they have played most games in
the entire NHL without any breaks.
971108: "Long time, no seen": Itīs been a
while since I last updated this page. Well I smply havenīt had the time. The Pens goalie
Peter Skudra had a shutout against the Red Wings until the last minute of the game, when
Brendan Shanahan tied the game. Pity, but itīs still a good sign for Skudra.
971101: Short report: A very short report today. The
Pens won tonightīs game against Vancouver 7-6. They had a 2-0 lead early in the first
period but they actually let the Canucks score 5 goals in less than 6 minutes. The Pens
won in OT.
971029: Calgary won: Peter
Ferraro scored the opening goal followed by tw other Pens-goals. But the Pens gave their
3-0 lead away and lost 6-3.
971026: Wregget injures knee in O-T won over Canucks:
Ken Wregget made four saves before leaving 3:12 into the game with a bruised nerve in his
knee. He was replaced by Tom Barrasso.
Late in the 2nd period the Canucks had a 2-0 lead but 18:42 Stu Barnes one-timed a pass
from Alexei Morozov. 12:15 into the 3rd period Eddie Olczyk tied the game assisted by
Wilkinson and Peter Ferraro. And 0:41 into the O-T period Kevin Hatcher blasted the
game-winner past McLean assisted by Straka and Francis.
I donīt know how serious Wreggets injury is. Maybe this is an opening for Lalime.
971025: A loss in Edmonton: The Pens lost tonight
(4-3) for the first time since 9th october. Dan McGillis put the game-winner past Tom
Barrasso in the final period. The Pens goal were scored by Olczyk, Johansson and Jagr.
971023: Two good news: The Pens won their third
consecutive roadwin today when they beat San José Sharks 2-5.
The Sharks won the first period after a goal by Jeff Friesen 1:41 into the period.
8:54 into the second period Ron Francis tied the game with his 5th goal for the season. He
was assisted by Andreas Johansson and Jaromir Jagr. 13:00 Todd Gill gave the Sharks a lead
again with a goal assisted by Nolan and Kozlov. Jagr then tied the game again with HIS 5th
goal for the season in 16:22 assisted by Chris Ferraro and Alex Hicks.
Hereīs the summary for the 3rd period:
Olczyk (Hicks, Wright), 6:58
Olausson (EN), 19:14
Brown (Barnes), 19:37
The Pens are really playing well to Kevinīs new defensive system. But one thing that
worries me is the fact that the Pens had 7 Power-Plays and not a single PP-goal.
The Pens have traded Greg Johnson to the Blackhawks for finnish
defenseman Tuomas Gronnan.
971020: Short report: The Pens played very, very well
and beat the Florida Panthers 1-4. This was Tom Barrassos 300th win and he is the first
American born goalie to achieve that. Jagr had two assists in a game that was an exact
copy of the previous win. Iīm quite hopeful about this. This could turn out real good.
971018: The Pens won again: The Pens tonight beat
Tampa Bay in a 4-1 win. The goalscorers for the Pens were Martin Straka, Jagr, Francis and
Greg Johnson (empty netter). Tom Barrasso had another good night. The Pens are beginning
to play like Constantine wants and thats good!
971016: "Saved by Wregget!!!!": I guess you
heard that line quite often in tonightīs 1-1 road tie against Montreal. The Pens were
outshot and Ken Wregget kept them in the game. I donīt know if they can keep up like
this. The Pens just have to get better on scoring.
The Pens goal was scored by Garry Valk.
971015: Greeeeat victory: After a tremendous effort by
the Pens and especially Tom Barrasso the Pens tonight beat the Rangers in the Madison
Square Garden with the only goal in the game scored by Ron Francis in the end of the 3rd
period. He was assisted by Hatcher and Johansson.
Nedved has given the Pens a two year offer for about $6 mil. I hope
they accept it!
971012: Pens won: Finally the Pens won again. They
beat the Huricanes with 4-1. Sadly that doesnīt have to mean anything good due to the
fact that Carolina is the worst team in the league. The next game, against the Rangers,
would be a real test.
The goalscorers for Pittsburgh were Francis, Jagr and Stu Barnes (2). Hatcher took a
matchpenalty in the lastminute of the game for highsticking.
Thereīs no news on the Belanger- or the Nedved-situation.
971010: The best team won: It went as I predicted lost
to the Flyers. The score was 3-1. The Pens didnīt really play a bad game, but
Philadelphia was simply better. Next game is against Carolina. Finally a team worse than
the Pens.
971009: Worst game so far: The Pens played their worst
hockey so far this season losing to Montreal by 0-3. They were outplayed everywhere.
Doesnīt Craig Patrick understand that the Pens need size??? Next game is against the
Flyers. Hmmm. Can anyone guess the outcome?? I can, indeed!!!!!!
971006: New player coming?: The Pens are trying to
sign Jesse Belanger from his Swiss club. Letīs hope they make it!! It could be an
improvement!!
971005: First loss: The Pens lost tonight with 5-3 to
Florida. The first period was scoreless but Chris ferraro scored early in the first
period. But Wregget had a bad game and Panthers got 3 goals in less then 3 minutes in the
third period. Why werenīt Tommy the first choice goalie tonight??
Joe Dziedzic is going to be assigned to a minor-team. Iīve siad
this before, and Iīm sying it again: Donīt ask me why!!!!!! Donīt the Pens need bigger
guys??
971004: Short report: There will be a short report
today. The Pens beat Carolina 4-3 after 2 goals by Eddie O. Tom Barrasso had a strong
game.
Joe Dziedzic is put on the waivers. Donīt ask me why! Please,
donīt let any other team grab this guy!!!!
971002: Pens - Kings 3-3: The 97/98-season opener
ended in a tie against Los Angeles. Kevin Hatcher had a strong game and contributed with 2
goals. He scored the first one in the first period, followed by Morozov who gave the Pens
a 2-0 lead on a beautiful pass by Jagr. Garry Galley scored 2 PP-goals and former penguin
Luc Robitaille scored to give the Kings a 3-2 lead. But Hatcher made a nice goal to tie
the game.
Jagr assisted on all three goals.
Tom Barrasso had a good game.
The Pens D were pretty good tonight.
The Pens lines were:
Morozov-Francis-Jagr
Brown-Straka-Johansson
Olczyk-Hicks-Wright
The Pens used the following defensemen:
Tamer-Slegr
Hatcher-Kasparaitis
Olauson-Werenka
The Pens have pulled Peter and Chris Ferraro off the waivers from
the Rangers. They are promising young players which I hope will be useful to the Pens.
971001: Francis gets C + other news: Ron Francis has
been named captain.
In tonights game weīll see Tom Barrasso as the starting goalie.
Very interesting, indeed!
Dome is signed to a three year deal worth about $875,000 per season.
He will be playing tonight.
Morozov will play in the top-line along with Francis and Jagr.
GOOD LUCK, PENS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
970930: LaFontaine traded: The
New York Rangers today acquired center Pat LaFontaine from the Buffalo Sabres in exchange
for a second-round pick. Why donīt the Pens get any new players? Why do they just give
away players for nothing?? Let us for instance have a look at the waiverlist. Both Ulf
Dahlén and Kevin Miller are available from Chicago. The response from Pittsburgh? Nada!!
Instead they lose Robert Lang.
970929: Leroux traded: Many things is happening with
the Pens roster these days. Many players are leaving the club but none are coming. A
couple of days ago Jason Wolley was dealt to Buffalo (of all teams) for a #5. Today
Francois Leroux was sent to Colorado for a 3rd rounder, and Robert Land was lost to Boston
in the waivers.
970928: Page news: As you probably can see Iīve
updated this page a bit. Iīll be updating the other pages soon.
970926: S(t)uspension: In a pre-season victory against
Boston Stu Barnes slashed Joe Thornton. He will be suspended 4 games.
Thereīs no news on the Nedved-situation.
Morozov is signed and will be playing for the Pens this season.
970917: The Nedved-situation: As you all know Petr
Nedved and the Pens havnīt reached a solution on the contract-situation. He says heīll
play in Czech Republic next year if he doesnīt get the money he want. But the newest
rumor is that hemay be heading to Malmo IF of the Swedish Elite League. This would
be really, REALLY bad!!! Not only because Malmo IF sucks!!!!!
By the way, the Pens won a Pre-season game against the Red Wings. 2-0. None of the better
players showed up. The goal-scorers were Oksiuta and Fitzgerald. Wregget (16 saves) and
Skudra (8 saves) combined for the shutout.
970820: No news: I havnīt found
any other information about the contractsituation with Jagr, Nedved and Morozov. But I
have heard that Pens got Jiri Slegr for a #2 pick. Slegr played last year for Sodertalje
of the swedish elite league. I have also heard that the Pens might be interested in Niclas
Andersson of the Islanders. This would be very good in my opinion. He hasnīt produced
that much offensivenumbers, but thatīs because he havnīt played alot in the NHL. But
when he got his chance last year showed that he could be a player to count on.
970810: New signing: While I was on my vacation the
Pens were kind enough to sign former penguin Martin Straka. Iīm very pleased with this. I
liked Straka while he were in the Penguin-uniform. But Iīm NOT very pleased with the
contract-situation of Jagr, Nedved and Morozov. The Morozov-situation is the most stupid
of the three. $200.000?????? Give me a break!
970802: Finally som signings: Yesterday the Pens
signed Brad Werenka. He played last season in the IHL and was named IHL defenseman of the
year. He has played for Edmonton a couple of years back.
The Pens have also resigned Ian Moran.
Instead of returning to Sweden former penguin Tomas Sandstrom signed
with the Mighty Ducks.
970717: More freeagents signed: Is
Craig Patrick on a vacation or something?? Today Andy Moog was signed by the Montreal
Canadiens, Bob Errey was signed by Dallas and Tampa Bay signed defenseman Yves Racine. Am
I missing something here??? When a team has a lack of something they usually try to do
something about it!! And the Pens really has a lack of quality defensemen.
970707: Skrudland signed: We can forget about Brian
Skrudland. The New York Rangers got his signature before the Pens did. Pity!!!! What is
Craig Patrick doing?? Is he going to sign any free-agent??? Does he even know that the
Pens are in an almost desperate need of improvements???? I sure hope he does!
970703: Free agents: The pens are trying to sign Brent
Gilchrist and Brian Skrudland. Theese players would be interesting to have in the team. I
hope the Pens will spend much time on the free agent market, and maybe become as active as
Islanders are.
(Would be a thrill to get Mark Messier to sign for the Pens, wouldnīt it?)
970621: Draft: The Pens choosed 18
year old Robert Dome with ther #1 pick. North American Central Scouting rated him 27th. He
played last year in Las Vegas Thunder of the IHL where he scored 27 points in 57 games.
Round 2: Defenseman Brian Gaffaney. Big defenseman who says hewill own the corners and
thefront of the net.
Round 3: Defenseman Josef Melichar. A very defensive player who has to gain some phsyical
skills.
Round 4: Center Alexandre Mathieu. Reportedly a good skater and passer.
Round 5: Defenseman Harlan Pratt. Offensive minded player who tries to copy the Larry
Murphy type of play.
Round 6: Petr Havelka.

New Head-Coach: It has been a while since I last updated
this page, but here I am again. Well, enough with bull
talk, Iīm proud to tell you that the Pens have got
themselves a new coach: Kevin Constantine. As far as I
have heard, Kevin is a fine coach. He has coached San
Jose for three seasons. He also led the Sharks to their
first playoff. The future will be exciting, VERY
exciting. The future, hmmm. What can we expect? Will we
see this after the award ceremony in Toronto?? Will
the Pens pick a good player in the annual NHL Entry Draft
held in Pittsburgh?? The future will tell!
970505:
Computer breakdown: Iīm sorry for havnīt updated this
page yet but my computer has quit working. But as we all
know the Pens lost in Philadelphia, and Mario has played
his last NHL game. Itīs hard to imagine the future
without Mario. Letīs hope that Jaromir Jagr can stay
healthy and take the responsability as the new superstar
in Pittsburgh. Letīs also hope that the Pens will use
some money for a new player. But noone can replace Mario.
Just translate Lemieux from french, it means "the
best".
970423:
Finally a win: While the Flyers had a weak game the Pens
had a very strong game, beating the Flyers, 4-1. In what
some would say Marios last game in the Igloo the arena
almost exploded form chanting fans after Mario
Lemagnifique scored the 4-1 goal on a breakaway. The
whole team played better tonight.
STANLEY CUP, HERE WE
COME!!!!
970420: New loss: Although
the Pens had a 0-1 lead after the first period
Philadelphia Flyers got off with a 3-2 victory. Mario
Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr scored one goal each. Now two
games are to be played in the Igloo. The Pens simply have
to win those games.
970418: Lindros - Pens:
5-1: The first game against Flyers was a total mess.
Lindros was awsome. The Pens didnīt do anything until
the third period whenJagr scored a goal after five
minutes. Mario left the game with no point. Philadelphia
is a very tough opponent in the first round. If the Pens
can make it through this series I think theyīre going to
go far in this playoff.
970414: Marios last game:
The Pens lost in Boston in Mario Lemieux last regular
season game in his career. But a funny thing is that his
last game was against the same team as his first. As a
rookie Mario Lemieux played his first game against the
Boston Bruins, scoring on his first shoot in his first
shift. Thatīs something.
970411: Pens edged: I knew
that this was going to be a tough game. Tampa Bay had to
win in order to keep their playoff hopes alive, and with
4:56 left in the game Dino Ciccarelli scored the 4-3 goal
assisted by Igor Ulanov.
970409: Marioīs goodbye:
Le Magnifique has played his last regular season game in
the Igloo. He assisted Eddie Olczykīs emptynet goal. The
other goals by Nedved and Beranek. Itīs good that the
secondline is also scoring.
What will happen to
the Pens whitout Mario? Read something about it here.
970406: Ottawa downed:
Iīm just going to add the scoring summary for the game:
PERIOD 1: 4:04: 1-0:
Nedved (shorthanded) (Barnes, Valk), 14:05: 2-0: Dziedzic
(Mullen, Moran), 15:56: 2-1: Redden (Alfredsson,
Cunneyworth), 16:54: 3-1: Hicks (Barnes, Valk)
PERIOD 2: 4:44: 4-1:
Nedved (J Beranek, Hatcher), 11:43: 4-2: Zholtok
(Dackell, Lambert), 15:22: 5-2: Lemieux (shorthanded)
(Jagr, Kasparaitis)
PERIOD 3: No scoring
970404: A tie with
Hartford: Due to some lack of time I wont write that much
info about tonightīs game. Kieth Primeau tied the game
with less than 4 munites left in the game. Mario had his
goal #611 and had some assists.
970401: Lemieux ties with
Hull: In tonightīs game Mario Lemieux scored his 610th
goal of his career, miving him into a tie with Bobby Hull
for a 6th place in the All-Time list.
The Pens scoring was
as follows:
Period 1: 6:21 Ian
Moran (Hatcher, Hicks), 8:04 Josef Beranek (Kasparaitis,
Nedved)
Period 2: 3:04 Jaromir
Jagr (Lemieux, Francis), 18:30 Mario Lemieux (Francis,
Jagr) (PP)
Period 3: None
I donīt know about
you but I think the Pens look like a better team now
(partly with the injured players back). Mario Lemieux
said that the players have found themselves now and
enjoys playing more than they did before.
970330:
Jagr return: After the 8-5-loss in Montreal the Pens flew
to California, and L.A. and bet the Kings in a
4-1-victory. Ron Francis had a tremendous game tonight
scoring two goals (including his #400) and one assist.
Jagr also had a lucky comeback with two assists.
In 7:11 Ron Francis
scored the only goal of the period assisted by Jagr and
Wolley.
1:57 into the second
period Eddie Olczyk scored the 2-0 goal to give the Pens
a 2-0 lead, assisted by Nedved. 11:30 Francis scored his
second goal of the game assisted by Lemieux and Jagr. 3-0
came from Fredrik Olausson in 12:58 assisted by Lemieux
and Francis.
Roman Vopat scored in
the third period on a power-play.
The Pens had five
power-plays this game but didnīt score a singel goal on
any of them. Strange.
970328: New loss
(surprised?): Iīm not going to write that much today. It
feels too sad. Montreal had a 5-0 lead after the first
period. But Mario had a strong game, finishing with 5
points.
I donīt know what the
Pens need in order to get better. But I know something:
1) Give Mario a rest
the next game, or until heīs healthy.
2) Give EJ the
coachingjob back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
970325: No report: Iīve
been out of town lately and because of that I havnīt
been able to update this page. Iīm sorry I didnīt tell
you erlier. Keep visiting.
The Pens have now only
got 9 games to get a better place in the Eastern
Conference. Next game is in Montreal. Could be pretty
though the way Penguins are playing now.
970317: Another loss: The
Pens left Dallas with a 6-2-loss. Iīm not going to write
much about this sad game except for the Pens
goalsscorers: Nedved and Kasparaitis.
The Pens have now got
home-games; Buffalo (can be pretty tough), Toronto (the
Pens have to win this game) and New Jersey (can also
cause some trouble).
The trading-deadline
is aproaching and I think itīs time for Craig Patrick to
make a big trade in order to make this team look like a
Stanley-Cup candidate.
970315: Mullens big day
spoiled: With 3:59 left in the second period Joe Mullen
scored the 2-3 goal and became the first american-born
player to reach the 500 goal-mark. He is also the 25th
player to score 500 goals. But the "Avs" spoild
the celebrations, with much help from Joe Sakic who
scored his first hat trick in nearly five years. The
score was 6-3. Olausson scored the first goal (assisted
by Mullen, Woolley) on a power-play 17:04 into the first
period. 0-2 came 1:30 into the second period from Francis
(assisted by Olausson, Lemieux). 2-3 from Mullen in 16:01
(assisted by Hicks, Tamer). After that the
"Avs" took a hold of the game and won.
But the game wont be
remembered for the loss, but for Mullen 500th goal!
970313: Another tie: With
49 seconds left in the third period Stu Barnes scored the
tying 5-5-goal. Both Penguins and the Coyotes lead this
game a couple of times. 7:01 G. Valk scored the 1-1-goal
on a pass from Woolley. About two minutes later Olausson
scored a goal assisted by Lemeux and Johnsson to give the
Pens a 2-1-lead before the periodbreak. 9:36 into the
second period Barnes scored a power-play-goal assisted by
Woolley and Lemieux. 4:48 into the last period of
regulation Hicks scored the unassisted 4-4-goal. And in
19:11 Barnes scored the tying goal on a beautiful set-up
by Lemieux and Francis.
970311: Win becomes tie:
Montreal scored two goals in the last period to get away
with a tie. 3:23 into the first period Hatcher scored the
gameīs first goal assisted by Mario and Andreas. When
the clock showed 10:57 Barnes scored the second goal of
the night assisted by Nedved and Hicks. There were no
scoring in the second period and didnīt allow any goals
until 16:25 into the last period when Valeri Bure scored
a power-play goal assisted by Recchi and Rucinsky. And in
18:08, when Jocelyn Thibault was pulled from the net to
leave room for an extra attacker, Stephane Richer scored
the 2-2 -goal assisted by Recchi and Damphousse. Montreal
got a power-play 2:24 into the OT-period when Ian Moran
got called for holding.
970309: Finally a win: The
Pens finally won again. They beat Philadelphia Flyers on
an OT-victory with the score 3-2. In the first period
Valk scored the 1-0 -goal after Kasparaitis had stolen
the puck and passed it to him. In the second period
Prospal scored two goals to give the Flyers a 2-1 -lead.
But in the second period Glen Murray scored a PP-goal on
a pass from Lemieux and Olausson. Olausson then scored
the winning-goal in the OT-period. The pass came from
Francis and Barnes. Ken Wregget stopped 32 shots. The
teams were equal in shooting, 34-34.
970225:
Big trade?: According to the Iglooreport the Pens have been talking with the Bruins
to get Adam Oates. The B:s have also spoken to New Jersey
and a third team (probably St. Louis) about this. I
donīt know if the Pens have a chance to get him. Weīll
see....
970222: New Pens-trade:
The Pens have sent J.J. Daigneault to the Mighty Ducks in
exchange for LW Garry Valk. I think this trade is good.
Penguins need a forward who isnīt afraid to use his
body, and J.J... I think we can do without him.
970219: Pens interested in
Forsberg: As you know the "Avs" are
experiencing some trouble with their salaries. Among
other teams (Chicago, Islanders (!), Rangers) the Pens
where interesting in acquireing Peter Forsberg. But now
when Peter signed a thre-year contract worth 105 million
sek I donīt think heīs going to move. Maybe Sakic
then...?
970216: Johnsons first
Penguin-goal: In the 5-1-loss to the Flyers Greg Johnson
scored his first goal as a Penguin. Check out "Penguin of the Week".
970205: Mario joins
exclusive group: In tonightīs win over Vancouver Mario
Lemieux scored his 600th goal of his career. He now joins
the 600 goal club with legends like Gordie Howe, Marcel
Dionne and Wayne Gretzky.
970128:
Sandstrom traded: This is a sad day I think. Thomas
Sandström, the outstanding player from my homecountry
has been traded. From now on heīs going to score his
many goals to the joy of the Detroit Red Wings-fans. As a
"thank-you-for-all-the-goals,-games,-and-years-for-the-Pens"
I name him "Penguin of the Week". Well, let us face forward.
Weīve got a new center. Greg Johnsson. I think he can be
better than he already is. Heīs going to get more
ice-time in Pittsburgh than he got in Detroit I think.
Time will tell............
970122: Lemieux hurt:
Mario left the Calgary-game about 10 minutes into the
game due to back problems. I donīt know if itīs serious
or when he will return
970122: Thomas-rumors: A
rumor says that Rangers are about to get Thomas Sandstrom
in exchange for a draft-pick or a prospect. I really hope
this is only a rumor. About the Flames-rumor I wrote
about a couple of days ago the player Pens would get in
exchange for Thomas is Ronnie Stern. This would be a
little more interesting than the lousy Rangers-bid.
970119: Two goals by
Lemieux: Mario Lemieux scored two goals when the Eastern
Allstars beat the Western Allstars with 11-7. Owen Nolan
set a record when he scored twice in just 8 seconds.
There were no less than 10 goals scored in the second
period. That was of course also a record.
970119: "Bye, bye
Sandstrom?": Refering to the swedish newspaper GP Thomas Sandstrom might be heading
to Calgary. The Penguins want to lower the cost of
salaries. Toronto and NY Rangers have also been
mentioned. I donīt know what the Pens will get in
exchange.
970116: New NHL-record by
Lalime: As the Penguins edged the Whalers in a 0-3
victory Patrick Lalime set a new unbeatenstreak-record by
a starting goalie. He played his 15th game whitout a loss
(to compare with Ken Drydens 14). I believe I speak for
all Pens-fans as I say: CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!
970115: Lalime enters
hockeyhistory: In tonightīs win over Dallas rookiegoalie
Patrick Lalime tied Ken Drydens old record for longest
unbeaten streak by a starting goalie. If Lalime continues
to play like this heīs going to be a strong candidate
for the Calder Trophy.
970115: Trade-rumors: The
Pens are, as far as Iīve heard, looking to get Luke
Richardson from the Oilers. They would probably have to
give up a draftchoice or a prospect in exchange. The NY
Rangers are interested in Thomas Sandström, but I dont
know how the Pens have responded to that.
970104: Lalime named
Rookie of the month: On January 3 Penguins rookiegoalie
Patrick Lalime was named the NHL Rookie of the month.
Read more about it here.
961229:
Another shutout by Lalime: In tonightīs game against
Buffalo Patrick Lalime got his second shutout as the Pens
had a 2-0 win. Read about him in "Penguin of the Week". Mario Lemieux and Fredrik
Olausson each had a goal.
961228: Wregget out: Ken
Wregget is out six weeks with an injured hamstring.
Patrick Lalime had to replace him in the 3-3 tie against
Montreal. I really hope the Barrasso-rumor (that says
Tommy will be back after newyear) is correct. Otherwise
the Pens might have to do another trade. Ther have been
some talk about a Leroux - Mike Vernon-trade.
961219: New traderumor: A
rumor says that a big trade is coming up. The trade would
send John Vanbeisbrouck (G) from Florida in exchange for
Saint Ron Francis. I thought it was so silly I just had
to put it up. What else can you do than laugh??
961214: Lalime gets
shutout: In tonights 0-4 win against the San Jose Sharks
rookiegoalie Patrick Lalime got his first NHL-career
shutout. The goalscorers for the Pens were Sandstrom (2),
Jagr and Wright.
961211: Vote for the Pens:
You can vote for the Pens-players for another five days
before the ballots is closed. Lemieux, Nedved, St. Ron,
Jagr, Hatcher and Kasparaitis are the Pens-players you
can vote for to the NHL-Allstar game startinglineup.
961210: Bergkvist news:
Stefan left the hospital in Cleveland this Sunday. His
girlfriend Jenny Hedberg and mother Lena Bergkvist had
arrived to support Stefan.
- "They cook food
and take care of me. Thatīs nice!" says Stefan to
the swedish newspaper Expressen. He hasnīt got all his strength back yet
(mostly sitting and watching TV) but heīs getting
stronger every day. Itīs unsure wheter heīs coming back
to hockey this year. If not heīs going back to Sweden.
961207: Wregget hurt:
Kenny Wregget was hurt in tonights game against
Washington. Patrick Lalime replaced him and got his first
ever NHL-win.
961202: Jagr named Player
of the month: The NHL named my Penguin of the Week, Jaromir Jagr, their Player of the
month today.
961201: Barrasso out for
several weeks: Tom Barrassoīs shoulder injury will keep
him from hockey another 6-8 weeks. Rumors say that the
Pens are about to trade for another goalie. Byron Dafoe
(Kings) and Andrei Trefilov are mentioned. Dave Roche has
been mentioned as the player Pens will give up.
961122:
Bergkvist has tumor: Stefan Bergkvist wont play any
hockey this season. He will have surgery in early
December to remove a tumor on his hearing nerve in the
right side of his head. His condition is termed acoustic
neoroma. Stefan has been having headaches for the past 5
weeks.
961120: Big moves: The
Pens have made some moves this night. First of all they
released Dan Quinn and Petr Klima. Patrick then showed
what an amazing manager he can be sometimes. He got
center Stu Barnes and defenseman Jason Woolley for Chris
Wells of the Cleveland Lumberjacks. Then he sent Dimirti
Mironov and Shawn Antoski to the Disney-team in exchange
for Alex Hicks and another great Swede, Fredrik Olausson.
The Pens have a much more impressing team today than they
had just a couple of days ago, I think.
961118: Smoke traded:
Today Bryan Smolinski was sent to the Isles in a trade
which sent Islanders fan-favourite defenseman Darius
Kasparaitis to the Penguins. The trade also involved a
great center from my homecountry: Andreas Johansson. He
will probably (maybe) take place in the Pens third line.
961117: Latest
Smoke-rumor: The latest rumor about Bryan Smolinski says
that heīs heading for Long Island in exchange for Darius
Kasparaitis. That trade would really make Pens a harder
team to play against. Manager Patrick has to do something
soon. There have been some rumors about a big trade.
Maybe with Hartford. Well somethingīs got to happen..!
961114: Barrasso out for
two weeks: Tom Barrasso is out 2 weeks with an injured
shoulder. Tommie havnīt played good this season, and Ken
Wregget is the first choice now. Lalime was recalled from
Cleveland.
961110: Smoke rumors: A
rumor says that Edmonton Oilers are offering Miroslav
Satan and Jeff Norton for Bryan Smolinski.
961030:
Smoke signs IHL-contract: Bryan Smolinski signed a
contract with the Detroit Vipers of the IHL. Heīs free
to leave IHL as soon as he signs an NHL-contract.
961026: Pens trade for
Petr Klima: The Penguins have just got the 13-year
veteran leftwinger Petr Klima from Los Angeles in
exchange for a draftchoice. Klima will surely take place
in the first line.
