| If you look for unusual
culture- and natureexperiences Nepal is the country to visit! Here you will find holy men, wild animals, the highest mountains in the world and approximately 35 different ethnic groups, among the most known are sherpas and ghurkas. In Nepal, you find 8 of the highest peaks in the world, and around 75 % of the surface is situated higher than 3000 mas! The name of the country comes from the words Ne and pala. Ne is the name of a divinity and pala means preservation in sanskrit. The name of the mountainchain connected with Nepal, Himalaya, is coming from the words him (snow) and alaya (home) consequently, "The Home of Snow". Nepal is offering the best possible high altitude trekking environment! I made my second trip to Nepal in autumn 1995. My first trip to the country "opened my eyes" for this beautiful and interesting spot of the world. This time it was not as chocking as during the first visit in this fantastic city. But Kathmandu was as chaotic as the first time! I spent some days in Kathmandu before the trekk as I wanted "to participate" in the Dasain-festival. The festival is going on for nine days and is honoured the goodess Durga. It ends with animal sacrifacions in the Durbar Square. I also had to wait for my lost luggage before I could leave. The main target with this trip was to do "The Everest Trekk" from Jiri to the "foothills of Mount Everest". This is the classic trail for the climbers of the highest mountain in the world and is considered to be one of the most beautiful of the mountaintrekks. During 18 days, I experienced the fantastic Khumbu-area which is the home of the sherpa-people. |
The sherpas have become famous all over the world for their brave
efforts during climbingexpeditions. It was the sherpa Norgay Tensing, together with Hillary who climbed Mount Everest for the first time in history. My trekk offered unforgetable views over some of the highest mountains in the world, Mount Everest, Lhotse, Makalu and Cho Oyo, as well as unforgetable meetings with the sherpa-people. I reached the highest point during the trekk at Chukkung Ri, almost 5600 mas. From here one can see three of the highest mountains in the world. Even if some of my steps where very heavy and "the air was thin" during the trekk I knew, that I will revert to Nepal again! I ended this trip to Nepal with some excursions in the Kathmandu- valley. I visited Changunarayan, one of the oldest temples in the country, and trekked from Nagarkot down the hills to Bhaktapur, just to say "goodbye" to the mountains for this time. As the trekks in Nepal mainly are done on high altitudes they sometimes are rather tough and dramatic, but very rewarding. In the villages you meet different mountainpeople and the views with the high, snowcovered peaks is something you never will forget. There is a big difference compared with the trekks I am used to do in the swedish mountains! I will take this opportunity to thank our trekking agency Sports & Nature in Kathmandu, Mrs Nandini Lahe-Thapa and Mr C B Gurung, as well as our guide and porter Thapa and Dil, who all supported us to arrange and fullfill the trekk and made it to a lifetime memory. The flag of Nepal is the only non rectangular flag in
the world. The currrent layout was descided in 1962 when the faces of the sun and the moon
were removed. The points of the flag are symbolizing the peaks of the
Himalayas. The sun and the moon reflects the hope that the country will remain as long as
the heavenly bodies.

In the rear of the crest you can see a rivervalley and the
peaks of the Himalayas. The flora and fauna are represented by a white cow, a golden
pheasant and rhododendrondflowers. The ghurkasoldiers, one of them in a british
uniform, is symbolizing the braveness of the nepaleses in combat. In the crest you can
also find the symbols for the sun and moon as well as the footprints of Bhudda. He was
born in Nepal. The crown is representing the royal family. |
