SWEDEN

Sweden is the fourth largest country in Europe. Half of the land surface is covered with forest, and lakes dot the countryside which is relatively flat. Less than 10% of the land is farmed. There are approximately 120,000 farms in Sweden and 90% of these farms are family owned and operated.
Yields are high with 10 ton/hectare of grain not uncommon in the southern regions, and dairy cows that average 10,000 litres of milk per year are fast becoming the norm.

The majority of the farms hosting have a combination of dairy, grain, and/or pigs, and farm between 50 and 200 hectares. Machinery and other farm mechanization is often of a high standard and, like in most European countries, farming is very intensive. There is a lot for a trainee to learn and experience.

Most host families are in their thirties, with children of about 10 years old and younger. They have a relatively high standard of living and are usually involved in a few things besides farming. Many host mums work off the farm to supplement the family income.

A white Christmas is almost guaranteed so remember to bring your winter woollies and a warm jacket as we often have snow from mid October until late March, at least in the northern half of the country. The long winter is well compensated by a fantastic midnight sun in June and July.

Sweden is an old country and there are lots of historical sites to visit, like castles and viking graves, and all larger towns offer a good variety of social activities.
There is something for everyone! Persons interested in wild-life activities should experience the Swedish lakes, forests and mountains.

The IAEA Alumni Club in Sweden has over 350 members and we organise many activities throughout the year, a ski-weekend, a hiking trip, a long weekend gathering in June and another one as we hold our annual general meeting in November. There are approximately 30-40 trainees working here every  year and we do our best to make sure that each one has the best possible time possible at their stay.

THE SWEDISH IAEA ALUMNI CLUB WELCOMES YOU TO SWEDEN
