Glen Plake is probably the most recognizable skier in the world, and one of the most successful. At 32, he's been skiing for 30
years. Some of Plake's career numbers:
17,000 pounds is the gross weight of his 42-foot road-trip recreational vehicle. (It's equipped with living quarters, a ski
room, and a projection theater where he shows ski movies.)
3,500 autographs were signed by him per weekend, on average, at last fall's consumer ski shows.
84 days of school were cut by him in the 10th grade to go skiing.
22 different mohawk styles are the most he has had in one season.
13 is the number of years he has had the mohawk.
5 stickers adorned his mohawk at last year's Ski Industries America show.
3 runs are all he has taken on a snowboard, ever.
1 nonskiing job has been held by Plake since 1986 (he drove a crane one summer in Charmonix, France, so he could ski
all winter).
Glen Plake is notorious as the South Lake Tahoe blunt with the mohawk and shaved eyebrows. Though many
complain that they are "Plaked Out," the Plake image is everywhere and his going rate is $1,000 a day. Plakes antics
and wild behavior puts off many people, but his solid skiing ability and bold lines have earned him a worldwide
following. These days, Glen can be found out in the middle of the Nevada desert, building his dream home and putting together
a new movie called "Natural Born Skier."
