Unix

An operating system from AT&T and was widespread at Universitys. As with Linux, there exists a lot of different versions of Unix. But when Linux has a well defined kernel, Unix has not. So different Unix versions can be very different.

The most common Unix-es are:

• System V release four -> SVR4, from AT&T
• Berkely software Distributions -> BSD, from Berkely University
• Linux, from different vendors
• Solaris or SunOS from SUN -> Stanford University Network
• AIX, from IBM
• SCO Unix, from SCO -> Santa Cruz Operations

The right to the name Unix has shifted from company to company. First AT&T, which started a company and transfered the name to that comany. Another company who, for a while, owned Unix is Novell.
