WEEK 8
Day 50
95 km to Aalborg via Hobro. My day started by
being greeted by puncture. Brisk wind tiring and troublesome until Hobro.
Driving drizzle for end of day. I pay for the luxury of my own YH room
and drag my bike indoors where it drips quietly. I bus into town
for a pizza and beer at a busy restaurant. Tonight should be my last night
of eating alone. Rain lashes down. Back at the YH my bike stands dry and
happy. We'll even get to sleep together tonight!! I have trouble focusing
my mind on things other than cycling and my own survival. I'm almost obsessed
by the fear of falling just before the finish line and realised later how
mentally tired I must have been at this point. I wish the last few days
had allowed a day or two off and sightseeing but lack of planning and time
prevented this. I'm glad it will be over but at the same time I will miss
the limbo existence. Most of all I'm looking forward to seeing my kids.
Tuesday 13 June
Day 51
112 km to Grenen, Skagen. A very pretty and worthwhile
final section on a cycle route across an enormous sandy heath. Terrific
tailwind and loads of rain for the most part but everything goes well though
the offer of gravel roads forces me to retrace my steps once or twice.
Arrived at Grenen 15.45. Rest of family arrived just 10 minutes later!
I get the ‘twin hug’ I've been day dreaming about for several weeks and
fumble open a bottle of sparkling wine on the wind-whipped sandy point.
My hands are clumsy and my mind befuddled even before I down a large part
of the contents. Pleased to have stopped and wish I could carry on. But
I've done it! 3707km in total. Insh’allah. Thank you God.
