In 1873 Military border was annihilated but only in 1881 all districts were subjected to the government in Zagreb.On the region of Zemuns county was ,according to register, 25000 habitants in 1869 (without Zemun which had special position).Important event was building of the railroad in 1883 wherewith Zemun was connected to middle Europe and then in 1884, by raising the first railroad bridge on Sava, through Belgrade with east. When in summer of 1914 I World war began,Zemun was forgathered in the line of war skirmishes. After the battle on Cer Serbian army entered in Zemun and retained in it from September 10th to14th . Some time later austria-hungarian authorities interned serbian citizens from Zemun and conterminous villages and they came back to their houses in 1916.After the breach of Soluns front austria-hungarian and german units had been hurridly retreating.On November 1st Belgrade was free and on November 5th 1918 citizens of Zemun welcomed with exaltation serbian army which came in town. It was the end of two centuries long austrian rule.City and county of Srem joined Kingdom of Serbs,Croats and Slovenians which was founded.The end of the war retrieved inherently changes in position of Zemun.The most powerful factor became the citizens who were the main bearers of citizens parties politicy, in the first place Serbian Radical,Democratic and Croatian peasents party, while the german citizens,strucked by colaps of Austria-Hungary,took attitude of anticipation and partly under the influence of former workers organisations,socialists streaming and revolucionary occurrences in the world, joined the social movement of workers and poor population. |
