Sport in Zemun has long history.Gymnastics was established as obligate subject in 1890. but only in two schools where there were conditions for its practice.Great contribution for growing tolerance and love for sport in that time was given by Djordje Gavrilovic, who had been more then 20 years teacher of mathematics and gymnastics in Zemuns Public School, Gymnasium and academy. He, among everything initiated establishing of Gymnastic society in 1897 which was in some hand resumptioner of tradition of Society for exercise and recruitment of body, which had been existing in the middle of eighties in XIX century. In 1905 was established Serbian Hawk society a later was formed Croat and German gimnastic society in 1907. All those societies stopped their work when I World war started and in 1919 in city was established HawkZemun which had been gathering pre-war members of serbian and croatian Hawk.First ball in Zemun appeared in 1904 during the summer school vacation and it was brought by pupils who studied in some of biger cities in Austria-Hungary empire.Gimnasiums teacher of mathematics and gymnastics Djordje Gavrilovic Brought in 1912 real ball to his pupils and explained them rules of the game.In 1913 started first exibitions between school classes and in the same year was founded Zemuns SKTango. Womans handball in zemun has much longer tradition then mans, considering that between wars in city was popular hazena which is forerunner of handball. In Zemun existed few hazena teams since twenties among which were the best those in sports societiesZASK, Sparta and Vitez.Players were mostly athleticians of that same clubs. One od the best Zemuns hazena players was Desa Lezajic, murdered in Jajinci in 1943 .Quality of zemuns clubs was high and they were equal rivals to belgrades clubs.Hazena clubs were recovered after the war but that game was overpovered by big and then small handball which was imported here in 1949/1950. Handball in Zemun started in schools especially in First and Second mixed gymnasium, and on the initiative of teacheer Predrag Manojlovic Dile in 1957 was established first club in sport society Mladost. With mans there was formed womans team also.Later on in Zemun were established few more teams.Mans team achieved its bigest succes by playing qualification for First Federal league in 1961. Valleyball came in Zemun in 1936 when in Soko society Matica Zemunwas occurred first course about this sport although some of its varieties had been played earlier. In 1945 and 1946 in Zemun was held few tournaments and in 1948 at DTV Partizan was founded volleyball club of that same name.First womans volleyball team in Zemun was founded at OK Nasa Krila in 1951 and two years later was founded at OK Jedinstvo also.Volleyball players are the most succesful zemun sportsmen when we talk about sport games.Mans team played for six time, under different names, in First federa league while the womans team Mladost did it once.
