In the ground alongside railway lines, signal cables for the railway's signaling system and external communication are buried. Often, their exact position in the ground is unknown. Over the course of time the cables may have to be unearthed so that they can be laid deeper orin new cable channels. On many occasions new cables are to be laid in the same place and this has to be done without damaging the old cables.

An excavator can be used to dig up the cables, but excavation involves a high risk of damaging or cutting the cables. This can have serious consequences for operation safety or for the communication system with high repair costs as a result.

The vacuum system RAILVAC can be used instead of an excavator to remove ballast and earth without damaging cables. With RAILVAC the work can be carried out safely and efficiently
